XO, J.D.

Greetings. In honor of the lovely weather Michigan (and much of the U.S.) has been encountering in the past few weeks, I present you with a light, airy, so-good-i-wanna-eat-you up band jam all the way from the ripe and roaring city of San Francisco. This blissful band I type of is, Brilliant Colors.

WHO? With inspiration hailing from the post-punk era and a style that mirrors the type of pop with teeth so sharp it could slice a block of swiss, Brilliant Colors offers a sensational, dream-like homage to all things lovely. Comprised of three cool-haired gals – Jess Scott (vocals, guitar) Diane Anastasio (drums) and Michelle Hill (bass) – Brilliant Colors formed in 2007 and have been perfecting their sound since. The band released “Introducing” on Slumberland and Make a Mess records in 2009 and after everyone was super pumped about that album, they began recording and touring all over the place.

LISTEN: Their most recent release, “Again and Again” sounds like a glass of lemonade dripping with condensation. With bass lines that flow round and round like a valley highway and vocals so sweet they make your tongue tingle, each song creates a memory of a distorted summer love affair once had or the hopeful realization that independence is the best attribute we can embody. Positive vibes and ear smiles are included, as well.

*fun fact: “Cult Face” off “Again and Again” was inspired by Patti Smith and her ability to transform hellish crowds into harmonic forces of energies through her music.

Buy their albums! Buy their 7″s! Consume creativity.

As a leap day treat, I decided to make a minimix courtesy of 8tracks.com. 8tracks is a killer website that lets you create your own playlists and browse other people’s playlists, regardless of genre. Playlists range from Disney study songs (?) to early 1990s R&B to Icelandic death metal. It’s awesome.

HIGHLIGHTS.

Swimsuit. Ypsi/Ann Arbor. Motown lady vocals traveling on a surfboard down Michigan Ave.

Brilliant Colors. San Francisco. Sounds like a soft frenzy of cheek kisses. *Album feature coming soon.

Bad Indians. Ypsi/Ann Arbor. BAD INDIANS is like that band you heard in a city bar and really “felt connected to” but could NOT remember the name for THE LIFE OF YOU revived in living color.

Electrelane. Heaven. Punk prowess chimed perfectly with every raging atom of femininity you embody. *Band Jam coming soon.

I hope you enjoy this light mixture of the then and now. Winter is on its way out. Spring is upon us. May this little mix get you through the chilling winds and snuffly noses that remain.

XO, JD.

CHIT CHAT is an Ypsilanti, Mich. based garage punk trio fevering its way through the Michigan music scene. CHIT CHAT has been making a name for itself all over the state, from Detroit to Grand Rapids, and are planning a tour throughout the midwest this spring.

SOUND: CHIT CHAT’s genuine, hard-hitting, yet soft when it needs to be, sound is only complimented by the talent each musician embodies. With vocals stemming from a high school girl’s bathroom in the early 80s and high-powered dueling guitar bits, each track on their demo album, CHIT CHAT, tells its own story.

Tracks like CRUISING, WYLD STYLE, and JOHNNY portray their soft, warm, nostalgic view of all things matter. While the harsh, dark, and crash-slashing tracks like BABY, CHIT CHAT, and KILLER BITCH expose a reality infused with cheating lovers, teasing friends, and everything in between. The median equals CHIT CHAT and CHIT CHAT equals <3.

BLOOD BIAS? Band members include Kevin Mckay (drums), Nick Melody (guitar) and Izzy Johnson (guitar and lead vocals). Izzy also happens to be my beloved older sister, so if you think I have some sort of bias towards this band, think again. Or shall I say listen again, because this band is a damn jam whether Izzy and I share the same blood or not.

CHIT CHAT’s self-titled demo tape can be found at their shows or on the Ypsi Music Shelf at Cafe Ollie, if you’re in the Ann Arbor-Ypsi area.

SEE FOR YOURSELF:

FEBRUARY 21. TRUMBULLPLEX. DETROIT W/ THE PHARMACY & TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS

MARCH 3. CAFE OLLIE. YPSI W/ TERMINAL ORCHESTRA

MARCH 9. SUICIDE HOUSE. GRAND RAPIDS W/ RADIATOR HOSPITAL & SWEARIN’
